Indigenous Cape Food & Wine Experience: A Taste of Heritage
There is no better way to discover the Cape than through its indigenous flavours. At Vineyard Voyages in Stellenbosch, our Indigenous Cape Food & Wine Experience invites guests to explore traditional ingredients paired with world‑class wines. This immersive journey celebrates the land, its people, and the culinary heritage that makes the Cape Winelands unforgettable.

So what are these mysterious local ingredients? Here is a list of a few of the lesser known ingredients that make the experience all the more exciting:
Bokkom – The Biltong of the Sea
Salted and sun‑dried mullet, bokkom is a West Coast delicacy. Its savoury intensity pairs beautifully with crisp white wines, offering guests a taste of maritime tradition alongside vineyard elegance.
Kaaings – Rustic Crackling Comfort
These golden lamb cracklings are sprinkled over pap or bread, adding rich flavour and texture. In our experience, kaaings are paired with robust reds, highlighting the Cape’s farm‑to‑table ingenuity.
Amasi – Tangy Fermented Milk
Amasi is a beloved South African staple, enjoyed with maize meal or sipped on its own. Its creamy tang complements lightly oaked Chenin Blanc, showcasing the harmony between indigenous foods and Cape wines.
Spekboom – The Miracle Succulent
Spekboom’s tart, lemony leaves add freshness to salads and garnishes. Beyond taste, it’s a sustainable plant that absorbs carbon. Guests savour spekboom dishes while learning about its environmental impact.
Suurvygie – Jewel of the Veld
This succulent fruit, sweet‑sour and vibrant, is used in jams and preserves. Suurvygie brings a burst of terroir to the table and is also used by some communities to soothe skin ailments.
Kooigoed – Fragrance of the Cape
Traditionally used as bedding and herbal tea, kooigoed carries calming properties. In our experience, it is introduced as part of a sensory tasting, connecting guests to indigenous knowledge systems.
Kei Apple – Tart Wild Fruit
Bright orange and sharp, the kei apple is enjoyed fresh or in chutneys. Its refreshing acidity pairs well with acidic white wines.
