For any international wine lover, the Stellenbosch Winelands sit right at the top of the ultimate travel bucket list. A trip to the Cape Winelands is absolutely unforgettable, offering award-winning wines, warm South African hospitality, and breathtaking natural beauty.
While the region is magnificent, the best way to truly experience it is on a guided trip. A local expert can lead you past the tourist traps straight to the best boutique estates, sharing insider knowledge along the way.
To help you plan your dream getaway, we have rounded up the answers to the top 5 questions we receive from guests before booking their Vineyard Voyages tour of a lifetime.
1. What is included in the wine tour?
Your tour package covers all transportation, entry fees, and standard wine tasting fees at the selected estates on our itinerary for the day.
Wine tastings in Stellenbosch are highly curated. Some wineries allow you to select your own varietals, while others offer themed tastings centered around specific terroirs, vine age, or winemaking styles.

Insider Tip: Always ask your wine advisor what their personal favourite is! You’ll get to witness the incredible enthusiasm and storytelling that makes the South African wine community so special.
2. How do we get around, and where is the pickup location?
You will travel through the scenic Cape Winelands in total comfort. Our main vehicle is a mid-sized, air-conditioned SUV designed to keep you cool during the sweltering summer heat or cozy during a wonderful winter wine excursion.

Collection: We arrange your pickup location in the days leading up to your tour. We can collect you directly from your accommodation or a pre-agreed central meeting point.
Surcharges: Because Vineyard Voyages is based in Stellenbosch, collections from outlying areas (like Cape Town CBD) may incur a small surcharge.
Drop-off: We can return you to your accommodation or drop you off at a different spot. Many of our guests love being dropped off in Stellenbosch town for some boutique shopping, an early dinner, or a few extra glasses of local wine!
3. What should I bring with me?
Comfort is key for a day out in the vineyards! Here is what we recommend whether you're touring the vehicles or inside a working wine cellar:

Comfortable walking shoes: You will be strolling around historic estates and lush gardens, so leave the high heels at home.
Closed-toe shoes (Essential for Cellar Tours): If your itinerary includes a behind-the-scenes cellar tour, closed shoes are highly recommended (and sometimes mandatory) due to the strict safety and cleaning protocols used around cellar equipment. Your guide will always confirm this with you prior to tour day.
A light jacket/jersey and sunscreen: The Cape weather can change quickly, so layers are your friend.
4. Which Stellenbosch wineries will we visit?
Our guests generally fall into two categories: those who have done extensive research and have a strict checklist of farms, and those who prefer to leave the curation to us. We love both!

If you prefer a tailored itinerary, we will introduce you to the hidden gems we personally frequent with our own family and friends. We select estates that offer a combination of exceptional wines, pristine mountain views, and knowledgeable wine advisors who truly represent the best of South African wine culture.
5. Am I obligated to buy wine at each estate?
Not at all! There is absolutely no obligation to purchase wine. Your primary focus should be enjoying the tastings, soaking up the atmosphere, and relaxing.

However, if you do fall in love with a particular vintage, you have great options:
International Shipping: For European travellers, we highly recommend companies like Capreo. Based in Germany, they stock a massive range of South African wines at reasonable prices and seamlessly handle the shipping and customs logistics straight to your door.
Local Souvenirs: If you are staying in South Africa for a few more days, grabbing a bottle or two to pack in your checked luggage is a fantastic memento of your day in the winelands.
